What’s the project about?

We’re creating a short film to summarise who we are as a charity at Breast Cancer Now. The video will be shown to our partners and supporters, to researchers and other organisations to showcase our work.

We aim to represent everything we do as a charity, and the impact it has for people affected by breast cancer. We want to showcase:

  • The Touch Look Check campaign, raising awareness of signs and symptoms
  • The helpline
  • Our trusted health information
  • Support groups and other services
  • Our campaigns for change
  • Funding for research

We want to demonstrate that everything we do will help us reach our goal that by 2050, everyone diagnosed with breast cancer will live, and be supported to live well.

We’re looking for people who’ve had a personal experience of breast cancer to join the cast for the film.

Who’s organising it?

Name of project lead: Mark Sydserff / Lucy Gordonsmith

Emails: mark.sydserff@breastcancernow.org / lucy.gordonsmith@breastcancernow.org

Job title: Senior Multimedia Manager / Multimedia Production Assistant

Organisation: Breast Cancer Now

Who can take part?

We’re looking for multiple people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

Anyone who’s had a personal diagnosis of breast cancer can apply, including:

  • DCIS
  • Stage 2 or 3 primary breast cancer
  • A local or regional recurrence of primary breast cancer
  • Secondary breast cancer

You also need to feel comfortable in front of a camera.

The filming will take place in London, so you need to be able to travel to London. We will cover your travel expenses.

Why do you want me to be involved?

We want the film to represent the real people affected by breast cancer who we’re here for. By taking part in the filming, you’ll help us create an authentic, powerful film that truly showcases who we are.

What will you ask me to do?

This is a casting call for people to feature in the short film for 1 or 2 scenes.

If you’re selected to take part, you’ll be invited to film your scene(s) in London. You’ll meet with the team beforehand to talk about what will be involved, what you’ll be asked to do, and how you’d like to do the scene.

We want to depict different points of someone’s experience of breast cancer and highlight where the charity is part of that. The 4 scenes that we’re casting for are:

  1. A woman at home, getting ready for bed. She checks herself using the TLC guidelines, and notices something different. Secondly, in a GP surgery, speaking in a consultation room with a GP
  2. A woman on the phone to one of our helpline nurses
  3. A man, sitting in a waiting area at a hospital or GP surgery, reading our health information
  4. A woman, sitting in a support group circle with other people, listening to someone talk

For each person, we’d also like to film moments of joy, whatever that means to you.

How do I get involved?

If you have any questions or would like to find out more, please contact Mark at mark.sydserff@breastcancernow.org
